The word portfolio comes from the Italian word portafoglio or carryleaf!
Portfolios have been used for a very long time. Examples can be found in literature dated all the way back to 1440.
While mostly used by architects and artists that needed to bundle together loose paper to showcase work it's become a stable for any profession where ones individual skills can't be summed up into a typical resume.
The electronic portfolio was pretty early on the scene in the world of computers.
Mostly existing as file exchange servers and various software, earliest version being an archival data bank for students of an elementary school in Wyoming in 1989!
It wasn't until 1996 that the idea of a portfolio on the WORLD WIDE WEB came to life but it took until the 2000s for portfolio websites to become truly popular. The Arrival of Web 2.0 websites changed the game. Since then portfolio websites have evolved hand in hand with the capabilities of modern computers, browsers and web development languages, and the imagination of those who make them.

These websites usually have a narrated portrayal of work the second you open them. Kind of like a gallery!
They range from being plastered with images like a wall of posters to a tasteful display of work with plenty of room to breath between each piece.
The one thing they all have in common is.. the images are forefront and center. Why waste time on words and things, and words.

The Catalog Type Portfolio!
The catalog portfolio website focuses on a categorization of the work rather than greeting you with a display of it.
Kind of like a resume, it'll track work by things like year, what collection/project it belongs to, media used or even clients.
While usually cataloged in text, there are many ways to do a cataloged portfolio website.
Probably ways no one has even thought of before... maybe no one will? Maybe we'll all die before we find out.

It may even include a true portfolio and/or a resume but the website itself is the true work on display.
It can be anything from an expertly done interactive website to an immersive and currated artistic experience.
Although usually the choice of web developers and other industries that work within the space of web design / programming,
..the possibilities are endless and depend for the most part on the imagination of the artist.

The various sites available cater to different types of media, artistry and industries.
